Do you like swing and blues music? Then the Brian Setzer Orchestra is the band for you! Formed in 1990 by Brian Setzer, former lead singer of The Stray Cats, this band brought back the Big Band Swing Era in full force with it’s full sections of trumpets, trombones, and saxophones, piano, upright slap bass, and drums. But unlike Big Bands of the past, Brian was the first to lead the band as a guitarist. They got their start playing clubs in Los Angeles, but were soon signed to Hollywood Records and on their way to the big time.
The band’s first two albums, The Brian Setzer Orchestra in 1994 and Guitar Slinger, were not huge hits, but still put the band on the map. In 1998, the band’s third album, The Dirty Boogie, hit the top 10 on the US charts. This album is where you can find what is probably their biggest and most well known hit, Jump, Jive, ‘n Wail. In the 2000’s, they continued to record albums. There were six all together, three of them Christmas albums. They also continued touring, both in the U.S. and in Japan. One album from this time frame that is noteworthy because of its unique style is Wolfgang’s Big Night Out, recorded in 2007. This album mixed the classical style in with the usual Brian Setzer jazzy flair, using classical songs such as Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and Fur Elise. Despite the fact this album had a different subject matter then the others, it still got Brian his 8th Grammy nomination!
If you are excited about trying out this style of music, or you are an old fan of the band, you are in luck! The Brian Setzer Orchestra will be in Omaha performing at The Orpheum Theater on Sunday, November 15!
