What’s so great about Voice Lessons at OSMD?

Have you ever thought to yourself, “I wish I had a better singing voice, but what’s the point in lessons? What are they going to teach me anyway?” While learning to sing can seem redundant, there are many reasons why vocal lessons are beneficial! Our teachers help you develop vocal placement, balanced singing, and broaden your vocal range. These skills will help you with your pitch and tone, which will help you sing beautifully. Another thing that you will learn is how to avoid vocal injuries. Now you may be asking yourself, “What does this all mean?”.

Vocal Terms and Definitions

Vocal Placement
Vocal Placement can be described as how a singer must concentrate their sound. When you are belting out a song like an American Idol Contestant there can be a lot of excess tension and unwanted muscle tension, which can lead to vocal injuries. Our instructors are trained to help you relax your larynx and have a good singing posture which will make you feel more comfortable

Balanced Singing
Balanced singing helps you build your core sound. In order to develop balanced singing, the instructors here will teach you how to relax your thoughts, hold good body posture, learn how to properly sing vowels, and help you find your own singing style.

Vocal Range
Vocal range refers to the notes that you can sing. Everyone has a range between a low and high note in which they can sing. With vocal warm-ups and exercises, our instructors will help you widen that range so that you can sing in more keys and styles.

Pitch and Tone
Pitch is the high or low frequency of a sound. When singing “on pitch” this means that the note that is being sung matches the pitch of the song in a melodic or harmonic tone. Tone describes the timbre of the pitch. This is the richness or the warm sound that comes with singing.

Avoiding Injuries
With singing, there is a risk of vocal injuries. Instructors will help you learn how to sing properly so that you can lower the risk of common vocal injuries. They will train you to warm up your voice properly using vocal exercises in order to achieve this.
