Female Guitarists in Omaha!

HEY LADIES!! Have you ever wanted to be able to play an awesome guitar solo? Have you ever wanted to move people with the mellow melodies of an acoustic guitar around a bonfire? Well, this blog is FOR YOU! We are going to be talking about female guitarists who play today!

There is nothing cooler than listening to an awesome guitar solo, we can all agree on that. Being able to play the guitar is an awesome skill to learn as it helps build confidence, it will help sharpen your concentration, and it can even increase your memory capacity! There are so many benefits to playing an instrument in general, and especially the guitar. Mainly, when we think of famous guitarists, a lot of men pop into our minds, but there are SO many female guitarists out there.

Regardless of whether you’re a boy or a girl, you have the power to play whatever instrument you want to play. In the guitar field, mainly men are the ones you see more of, but there are so many opportunities for girls to get their foot in the door. Everyone who is part of the music industry does not care if you are a girl or a boy, they just want to know if you can play your instrument well and with a unique flair.

In Omaha alone, there are so many women who are dominating the local music scene with their awesome talents. One of those women is Denise Hazard, a punk guitarist for a band called the Scabby Ghouls. She usually plays punk music, but can do other styles such as reggae and surf music. She says that learning those styles has taught her how to improve her skills. She’s been a music lover since birth and was raised on classic rock, so it’s no surprise that she started playing guitar. She started her musical path by participating in the choir and playing the clarinet when she was young. She practices 2-3 times a week and will do scales and finger exercises to keep her hand strength up. She prefers electric guitar, she says it gives her chills every time she turns on her amp! Her biggest inspiration is Joe Strummer from the Clash and Joan Jett!

There are plenty of women who are from Omaha who play guitar outside of Omaha. The band Tilly and the Wall was founded by Neely Jenkins and Jamie Pressnall. They are an indie-pop band that formed in Omaha. They used to be in a band with Connor Oberst! There’s also a mother-daughter duo called The Belles that are country singers and guitarists. Currently, they are on tour with another Omaha hometown hero, Jojo Siwa!

Another woman who really knows how to play the guitar is Sierra Sanchez, and as luck would have it, she teaches at OSMD! She can teach multiple things from voice to piano to guitar! She’s been playing music her entire life! Both of her parents were involved in music so it was always in her in life. She would sing in church and honor choirs and at school. She practices a little differently than most because she finds if she calls it “practice” then she won’t do it so she makes sure she thinks “I’m going to play today” instead! That way she can make music for hours! She says that being a girl in the music scene is a lot easier now because there are so many more girls being a part of bands! And even Denise said that being a girl doesn’t really matter in the music scene because people just want you to be able to play well, it doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl. Sierra really digs the acoustic guitar, but she also really likes the electric bass! She started taking her music lessons in the 3rd grade by learning how to play the piano, which made learning other instruments easier for her. She learned the guitar in the 8th grade! Her biggest inspiration is her mom. Her mom taught music in schools for 34 years and has such a passion and love for music that it inspired Sierra to start teaching herself!
