Welcome to week nine of our blog series, featuring questionnaires about our fantastic staff here at the Omaha School of Music and Dance. We hope you are enjoying learning about the private lives of our instructors who spend time with your children every week! This week we are featuring our piano instructor, Michaela Harwood.
What instruments do you in instruct and play?
I play and teach piano. I also have a fascination for the marimba. Not too many people know what this instrument is by name, but if I showed you a picture of one, you’d know what I’m talking about. But this might help you understand what instrument I’m talking about… according to Wikipedia, the marimba is a percussion instrument consisting of a set of wooden bars struck with mallets to produce musical tones. Resonators attached to the bars amplify their sound.
What are your hobbies outside of teaching music?
Outside of teaching music, I love to play the marimba any chance I get (as you may have figured from the previous question). I also love art, both making and admiring it. I love to create things based off of my own imagination and brainpower. I also love seeing with other minds have created. By admiring the artwork of others, it exercises my own imagination muscles.
Why did you decide to become a music teacher?
I first started by teaching my younger siblings years ago, when they were very persistent about learning to play like I do. Since then, I’ve found teaching music to be very rewarding. I decided that I wanted to teach others to play the instrument I love. I hope I’m able to share the joy I’ve found through learning music over the years.
Who is the person you admire the most and why?
The person I most admire is Jesus Christ. He is my Lord and Savior. I strive to model my life in a way that is glorifying to Him each and every day.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
If I could travel to any place in the world, it would be to Italy. I am extremely interested in the architecture, scenery and of course the food.
What is your favorite song?
I listen to so much music, I wouldn’t know where to start! Currently, I love listening to almost anything written by Claude Debussy, because of my love of impressionistic music.
What is the one thing you couldn’t live without?
As much as I hate to admit it, I couldn’t live without my iPhone. It keeps track of my busy school schedule, as well as anything else I may have planned to do. It also helps me out when I get lost while traveling to an unfamiliar place, which happens pretty often.
