Jazz Dancing for All Ages

Did you know that jazz dancing originated not long ago in the 1950’s as a result of many different kinds of music? While many people believe jazz dance developed from jazz music, it actually is deeply rooted in Caribbean culture. The funky and fun footwork of jazz dancing classes can provide an excellent aerobic work out for people of all ages. Adults and children can both have fun learning the swift movements while breaking a sweat in jazz dance class. Here are a couple reasons why jazz dancing is beneficial for all ages:

  1. Jazz dancing can branch generation gaps by teaching classic American dances such as the Jive, the Sockhop, and Swing dancing. Modern jazz combines these dances with crisp movements to create a dance that is both unpredictable and smooth. When children decide to take jazz dance, they may be exposed to music and movements that are far past their time, but can definitely add to their finesse as a dancer. When adults join a jazz dance class, they may be introduced to newer styles of movement, broadening their understanding of dance.
  2. Jazz dancing can teach new rhythms to people of all ages. The African and Caribbean beats can contribute to a widen sense of rhythm and grant people the freedom to play around with their movement more than in a ballet class. Jazz allows people to experiment with syncopation and roll offs while dancing because the rhythms are different.
  3. Jazz dancing can be used in many facets of the dance world, including theater and professional dance companies. The Rockette’s incorporate a lot of jazz movement in their routines with their famous kick lines. They also use jazz music to create impressive formations and syncopation of dance steps. Jazz dancing in Musical Theater is extremely common, especially in musicals such as Chicago, Guys and Dolls, and the Lion King. The exciting movement truly adds to the story being told.
  4. Finally, jazz dancing can be a great exercise for those who are bored by running on a treadmill. Jazz is fast paced, but also smooth so it creates an interval-like work out for adults. Jazz is entertaining for children to play around with and can be a great focus of energy for any child of any age.
