Who are you and what is your role at the Omaha School of Music and Dance? How long have you been teaching at OSMD?
My name is Karen Frahm. I am a violin instructor, and have been teaching at OSMD for a year and a half.
What do you like about teaching violin at OSMD?
I love the opportunity to share my knowledge of the music and string world with others.
How long have you been playing/performing? Where did you study your craft?
I’ve been playing for 20 years. I started at 9 years old, in fourth grade. I studied in college at UNO, and before that, in the Millard schools.
What drew you to music? What do you find fulfilling about music?
I really don’t know what drew me to music. I was figuring out songs on a keyboard at 6. I love how I can get lost in music and how it makes me think in different ways.
How has music affected/benefited your life? What skills are you applying in your daily life?
Violin/music makes me think creatively and analytically – which helps me think in different ways at my other job, too. I’m also in a hand-bell ensemble, which further expands my musical knowledge.
What kinds of challenges do you face as a working dancer/musician? And how do you rise to meet them?
String instruments are very appealing for parents of young children, because they can be sized to little hands. However, teaching very young students comes with a different set of challenges. It is a normal for very young students to have a hard time comprehending some of the concepts and maintaining focus through a lesson. My main goal is to encourage the student’s progress and enjoyment, so I like to work with students one-on-one and with parents to arrive at the best outcome.
What are the top three pieces of advice you would give to student dancers/student musicians to encourage their progress?
- Never get down on yourself
- Practice makes perfect!
- If you make a mistake, keep going
Now the fun stuff!
What are your favorite things to do in your free time?
I love to watch movies, hang out with friends and family, and play with my dog.
When you were “little” what did you want to be when you grew up?
I really didn’t know what I wanted to be.
If you could have picked a different instrument/type of dance, other kind of art, which would you choose?
I would have chosen piano.
What is your favorite movie? Your favorite book?
My favorite movies are Sister Act 1 and 2.
Who are your favorite musicians/bands, or dancers, artists?
My favorite artist is Justin Timberlake and my favorite band is Journey.
