How Hip Hop Increases the Self-Confidence of Children

A child’s self-confidence is developed rather early on in their lives. For this reason, the Omaha School of Music and Dance strives to promote a healthy level of self-confidence in all of our dance classes including hip hop, ballet, tap, and all other classes. Hip hop classes, specifically, build self confidence in many ways. Hip hop is a style of dance that naturally encourages self expression as it is often more improvisational allowing for more creativity and freedom with movements. Self-expression and many additional self-confidence boosters are discussed further below.

Hip Hop Teaches New Skills and Encourages Self-Expression

Hip hop dance incorporates several different styles of dances that encourage creativity and improvisations and are considered a great way to encourage individual expressions. Hip hop allows for kids to create their own dance combinations and moves to the beat of the music and it can really allow them to express their emotions through movement. By learning these new skills and expressing themselves, children will find increased self confidence!

Physical Benefits including Better Coordination and Balance

In addition, hip hop dances require a lot of energy and physical activity from kids to help them stay more physically fit. The physical movement is a way for kids to develop better coordination skills and balance. However, hip hop teaches them through movement how to also be graceful and can help develop their coordination and balance. Hip hop dancing is not always about “going hard” and “hitting it”, it also requires graceful movements and incorporates different dance styles like jazz and even lyrical dance techniques. The physical benefits of hip hop dance can foster an increased level of self-confidence.

Socialization with other Children

Hip Hop dance classes also allow kids to interact and socialize with other kids that might have the same interests. This allows some kids to create special bonds or friendship with others in the same class. In addition, most kids also tend to get excited about learning the latest dance moves that popular music artists perform. It is easy to see self confidence grow with the encouragement of good friends!

Performing in front of an Audience

Hip hop dance classes also help with self-confidence as children often take part in performances in front of their families and peers. This will help them gain confidence and feel positive about the hard work that they have put in. Dancing can really instill a sense of being committed and working hard and then receiving that positive reinforcement when they dance in a public performance. All of our dance students have the opportunity to study dance, practice and rehearse in an open and safe environment without the fear of failure or criticism. The dance classes at the Omaha School of Music and Dance are structured so students have a chance to be influenced by an adult role model, receive positive feedback and learn from one another.

At the Omaha School of Music and Dance, we believe that a child’s participation in dance should be an enjoyable experience that promotes self-confidence, self-esteem and self-identity. We give our dance students the chance to express feelings and ideas through movement which in turn helps them gain self-awareness and increase self-esteem. We encourage parent involvement and strive to create a partnership with our students and their families to continue building strong, smart and self-confident artists. All of our teachers promote healthy self-confidence by showing encouragement and enjoyment in all classes and to all students regardless of age or level.
