Four Things Your Child Will Learn in Children’s Choir
The Children’s Choir at the Omaha School of Music and Dance is one of our most popular classes for children ages 6- 10! We strive to keep the choir below 15 students so we can get to know each and every student and give them each personalized attention.
The OSMD Choir has two different class times and they meet for 45 minutes in length once a week. The two different classes times that we offer are on Monday evenings @ 5:45pm and Saturday mornings @ 10:30am.
Here are 4 things that the children’s choir students can look forward to learning throughout the class!
Proper breathing technique
Breathing is a vital component of singing. The way we breathe when singing is different than the way we breathe in everyday life, requiring us to use our respiratory muscles in new and different ways. The teachers at the Omaha School of Music and Dance will teach students how to develop breath control and good breath support.
Singing posture and formation
Proper singing posture enhances your breathing and can even optimize it – resulting in a better-sounding voice. The OSMD teachers will help students practice breathing from their diaphragm or tummy. Additionally, the teachers will be able to organize the choir to allow for the most uniform sound while allowing singers to sing comfortably and naturally.
When it comes to singing, producing notes is more like a stringed instrument than a piano, as it is possible to sing notes in between semitones. For this reason, with singing it is essential to have a good ear so that you can pitch notes correctly. The teachers at OSMD will give students to proper techniques to recognize pitches and adjust accordingly.
Proper vowel formations
Another technique the teachers will develop in the Children’s Choir students is the proper shaping of primary vowels. (Ah Eh Ee Oh Oo.) In order to sing in such a way that every word is clear and can be understood the singer must learn how to shape the vowel within the word itself. Learning how to do this will enrich your singing because the vowel actually carries the sound itself.
The best part about the Children’s Choir class here at the Omaha School of Music and Dance is that the class is fun and welcoming to students of all levels! The teachers will work with each student to develop their breathing techniques, singing posture and formation, pitch recognition, and proper vowel formations.
