Music lessons for any instrument, including voice, has many vast benefits. There is a common myth that many of these great benefits only apply to children, and not adults. I’m happy to report, that this is not true! For many adults there is a common hesitance when it comes to beginning lessons. I often hear people say that they are too old, or it’s too late. Another common concern is that they will feel out of place or embarrassed because music lessons are perceived as only taken by kids. I can happily report that none of these concerns are a factor at Premier Performing Arts Studio!
At our studio, 25% of our students are adults, and more are registering for lessons each day! There really is no exception when it comes to age. Everybody can learn and benefit from music lessons and any point in their lives. One of the most important benefits for adults taking music lessons is the stress relieving qualities. Practicing music and taking lessons relaxes the brain and the body. Lowering stress is an essential part of every adult’s life that is important to overall health. Simultaneously, music lessons help to build up the brain and increase cognitive function. Multiple studies have proven that music education increases IQ – and yes that means in adults too!
Another relatively unknown benefit of music lessons is that it can actually help prevent hearing loss! A recent study from Northwestern University showed that music lessons actually can reduce aging on your body’s ability to encode sound. This helps to stave of the side effects that come from losing this ability such as speech deterioration and overall quality of hearing. The time you will invest in music lessons is minimal compared to the large amounts of benefits that can come from taking lessons!
